It handled 68.8 million passengers in 2025, and many of them never leave the airport: they land, change planes and fly on. At Royal Airport Concierge, close to three out of five services we provide at Schiphol are connections.

A Schiphol connection is simple when you know which route you are on. This guide explains when you pass passport control, what the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) means for your transfer, and how a Meet and Greet makes the walk between flights easier.

First, know your route

What happens at Schiphol depends on where you are coming from and where you are going next. For travelers arriving from the United States, there are two common cases.

Your next flight stays in Europe (Schengen area). If you fly from New York to Amsterdam and then on to Rome, Paris or Barcelona, you enter the Schengen area at Schiphol. That means you pass passport control in Amsterdam, not at your final stop.

Your next flight leaves Europe. If you fly from the United States to Amsterdam and then on to Cape Town, Dubai or London, you can stay in the international transit area. In that case you do not pass passport control at Schiphol. Some nationalities still need an airport transit visa, so check your passport’s rules before you fly.

What EES means for your connection

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) records non-EU travelers when they enter the Schengen area for a short stay. Since April 10, 2026, registration is required for non-EU travelers across all Schengen countries.

If your connection takes you into Schengen, your first EES registration happens at Schiphol. Border officers record your passport details, a facial image and your fingerprints. Self-service kiosks in the transfer areas let you pre-register, which can save time at the desk.

What this means in practice:

Plan for passport control if your next flight is inside Schengen.

Expect a first-time registration to take longer than a passport stamp did.

Leave a comfortable buffer between flights, especially on your first trip since EES started.

How a Meet and Greet helps at Schiphol

Schiphol is large, and a connection often means a long walk, a passport check and a new gate. A Meet and Greet gives you one person who handles that with you.

A greeter meets you on arrival and stays with you for the connection.

Escort through the terminal, along the right transfer route for your next flight.

Support at passport control. Your greeter stays with you and guides you through the process. Everyone goes through the same border check.

Fast track where it is offered. Fast track lanes exist at selected airports and points only. When they are not available, your greeter waits with you in line.

Help for travelers who need more time. If you need a wheelchair, request it from your airline. Your greeter makes sure the wheelchair you requested is ready when you land.

This is especially useful for families, older travelers, groups who want to stay together and anyone on a short connection.

How to book your Schiphol connection

Share both flights. Your arriving and departing flight numbers let us plan the right route.

Book early in summer. Schiphol is busiest from May to September, and short-notice availability is limited.

No charge until the service is done. We place a hold on your card and charge it only once your service is completed.

If you are connecting through Amsterdam, you can get an instant quote for your Schiphol Meet and Greet.

ЧАСТО ЗАДАВАЕМЫЕ ВОПРОСЫ

Do I go through passport control when connecting at Schiphol? It depends on your next flight. If you connect from a non-Schengen country (like the United States) to a Schengen country (like Italy or France), you pass passport control at Schiphol. If your next flight also leaves the Schengen area, you can usually stay in the transit area without passport control.

Do I need to register in EES on a Schiphol connection? If your connection takes you into the Schengen area and you are a non-EU traveler on a short stay, yes. Your first registration records your passport details, a facial image and fingerprints. If you stay in the international transit area, you do not pass passport control at Schiphol.

How long should I leave for a connection at Schiphol? It depends on your route, your airline and the time of day. If your connection includes passport control, allow extra time, especially on your first trip since EES started. Your airline can confirm the minimum connection time for your itinerary.

Can a Meet and Greet help me skip passport control? No. Every traveler goes through the same border check. Your greeter guides you through the process, stays with you and walks you to your next gate.

Can I get wheelchair assistance on my connection? Yes. Request a wheelchair from your airline when you book your flight. Your greeter makes sure the wheelchair you requested is ready when you land and stays with you through the connection.

When is my card charged? We place a hold on your card when you book and charge it only once your service is completed.

Amsterdam Schiphol is one of Europe’s main connecting airports.
