Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) is Australia’s busiest airport and the main international gateway to the country. T1 International Terminal

T1 handles every international flight at Sydney Airport. Major carriers here include Qantas international services, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, United, Qatar Airways, and Air New Zealand. The terminal has duty free shopping, airline lounges, currency exchange, and its own Airport Link train station on the lower level.

Arriving at T1 means clearing both immigration and biosecurity. Australia has strict rules on food, plant, and animal products, so declare anything you are unsure about. Processing times vary with flight schedules, and busy morning arrival banks can add noticeable waiting time.

T2 Domestic Terminal

T2 serves most domestic airlines other than Qantas, including Virgin Australia, Jetstar, and Rex. It sits on the northern side of the airport, next to T3, and the two are connected landside. If you are switching between a Virgin or Jetstar flight and a Qantas flight, the walk between T2 and T3 is short and clearly signed.

T3 Domestic Terminal

T3 is the Qantas domestic terminal. It is connected to T2 by a covered walkway of about five minutes. T3 also hosts the dedicated Qantas terminal transfer area, which departs from near Gate 15 for eligible passengers connecting between Qantas domestic and international flights.

Getting Between Terminals at Sydney Airport

Because a runway separates T1 from T2 and T3, you have three main options for the transfer:

T-Bus (free shuttle). The Terminal Transfer Bus runs between T1 and the domestic terminals roughly every 15 minutes from 5:30 am to 10:30 pm. The ride takes about 10 minutes. From T1, you board on the arrivals level outside Arrival Hall B. It is free and open to all passengers.

Airport Link train. The train runs one stop between the International and Domestic stations in a couple of minutes. Note that a station access fee applies on top of the fare when you tap on or off at either airport station, which makes this the faster but more expensive option.

Qantas terminal transfer. If you are connecting between eligible Qantas flights, the complimentary Qantas transfer bus runs between T3 and T1. Ask Qantas staff if you are unsure whether your itinerary qualifies.

If you are arriving on an international flight and connecting to a domestic one, allow at least two to three hours between flights. You will need to clear immigration, collect your bags, pass biosecurity, transfer terminals, and check in again.

Getting From Sydney Airport to the City

Train. The Airport Link train is the fastest public option, reaching Central Station in under 15 minutes, with trains departing roughly every 10 minutes. Both the International and Domestic terminals have their own stations. You can pay with an Opal card or tap a contactless Visa, Mastercard, or Amex directly at the gate. Keep in mind the station access fee, which adds roughly 17 to 18 Australian dollars each way on top of the fare.

Taxi and rideshare. Taxi ranks and rideshare pickup zones are located outside each terminal. The trip to the city center typically takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on traffic.

Private transfer or chauffeur. Pre-booked drivers meet passengers at designated pickup areas. For international arrivals, most services allow around 60 minutes of waiting after landing to account for immigration and baggage collection.

Public bus. Route 350 stops outside T1 and T3, though it is slower than the train and less practical with luggage.

Departures: When to Arrive at Sydney Airport

For international departures from T1, arrive three hours before your flight. For domestic flights from T2 or T3, two hours is a safe margin. Peak periods, roughly 6 to 9 am and 4 to 7 pm, can add time at security and check-in, so give yourself extra room if you are flying during those windows.

Most airlines open online check-in 24 to 48 hours before departure. Checking in early and traveling with carry-on only can save meaningful time at the terminal.

The Sydney Airport Curfew

Sydney Airport operates under a night curfew. There are no scheduled takeoffs or landings between 11 pm and 6 am, and the public areas of the terminals close for several hours overnight. There are no rest zones or sleeping areas once the terminals shut, so if you land late or depart very early, plan a hotel nearby rather than an overnight stay in the terminal.

It is also worth knowing that a second airport, Western Sydney International at Badgerys Creek, is scheduled to begin operations in late 2026 and will run 24 hours with no curfew. For now, virtually all Sydney traffic moves through Kingsford Smith.

Tips for a Smoother Trip Through SYD

1. Confirm your terminal before you leave. Qantas domestic flights use T3, while most other domestic carriers use T2. International flights always use T1.
2. Budget generous connection time. Two to three hours for international to domestic connections is realistic, not cautious.
